Reentry plans that leverages a trauma-informed lens will be most successful for all of our students returning to school this fall. Needs for social, emotional, and behavioral supports are not new but have been agitated and surfaced in this traumatic season. Center these needs from day one. Lean into ways to teach, guide, and continually reinforce positive growth in these domains.

In this guide, CASEL shares a framework with actionable recommendations to help school leadership teams plan for the SEL needs of all students and adults during the upcoming transition into summer and the beginning of the new school year. While this guidance is written for school leadership teams, states and districts will play critical roles in ensuring schools have the resources, support, and guidance needed to carry out these actions.

Multi-tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), such as PBIS, are ideal frameworks for implementing strategies to support students coming back to school and to prevent and address further challenges. These six strategies for school teams will support a safe, predictable, and positive school year.

As our classrooms shift into the mode of distance learning, so must our mindsets about our role as educators.
